Winter Conditions in Rail Transport

In the winter of 2009/2010, technical problems occurred in rail transport. Across Europe, trains were stranded mid-route or could only continue their journey with reduced power because snow that had penetrated the rail vehicles had rendered electrical components inoperable. The most prominent example of this issue is the Eurostar, which repeatedly broke down in the Channel Tunnel.

The Challenge

Filtering snow is very difficult because there can be thousands of very different snow crystals, which can transform from one crystal type to another, even within seconds, depending on the climatic conditions.

Our Solution

The goal is to prevent snow from entering the rail vehicle, while also avoiding the blockage of fresh air and exhaust ducts by snow or ice. Through many projects, including those realized for Scandinavia, we have years of experience in this field and also collaborate with Europe’s leading research institute in the area of snow.

“Our solutions ensure that trains operate safely and reliably even under the harshest winter conditions.”
