1. General Information

The coating system must meet the specified requirements in accordance with the prescribed application guidelines.

2. Paint Specifications

As a general rule, the paint specifications agreed upon between Krapf & Lex and the customer apply!

3. Assessment of Visible Surfaces

The visual assessment is based on the following criteria:

  • Observation with the naked eye
  • Viewing angle for detecting surface defects: approximately 90º to the surface being inspected
  • Light level: at least 500 lux
  • The surface being observed should be free of surface reflections and direct sunlight
  • Viewing distance: approx. 1 meter

If there are visible surface defects, the use of assessment aids (e.g., a magnifying glass) is permitted.

3.1 Acceptable inclusions and surface imperfections

Coating Processes A, B, and C in the Visible Area

Components with large surfaces: e.g., doors, flaps (test format: DIN A3)

Beschichtungsverfahren >Ø 0,8mm >Ø 0,4mm leichte Schleifrillen kleine Poren kleine Dellen
A) Pulverbeschichten 4 8 X X X
B) Nasslack ohne Zwischenschliff 1 5
C) Nasslack mit Zwischenschliff 3

Components with small surfaces: e.g., ventilation grilles (DIN A4 test format)

Beschichtungsverfahren >Ø 0,8mm >Ø 0,4mm leichte Schleifrillen kleine Poren kleine Dellen
A) Pulverbeschichten 2 5 X X X
B) Nass / Nasslackieren 1 3
C) Nasslack mit Zwischenschliff 2

3.2 Assessment of Structure and Color in the Visible Area

Structure and color variation in accordance with the sample approved by the customer.

3.3 Gloss Level in the Field of View

Gloss measurement in accordance with DIN 67530: (Elcometer 401 Novo Glass 20° / 60° instrument), taking into account that surface textures, such as an orange peel effect, may influence the measured values during ongoing production.

Tolerance: ±5 GE

4. Inspection of non-visible surfaces: (paint finish on the back)

Run-outs, sagging: tolerated except on sealing and bolting surfaces
Inclusions: 10 inclusions Ø 0.5 mm / 4 inclusions Ø 1.0 mm (test format DIN A3)
Overspray: tolerated in the areas of ribs, angles, and webs
Gloss level: no specifications or measurements
Color shade: color shade deviations tolerated

5. Coating Thickness

Coating Thickness Measurement According to DIN 2360: (List Magnetik Type 5 FN – ST instrument)
The individual coating thicknesses (anodized layer and powder primer) must be measured separately.

Due to the complex geometry of our components, the specified coating thicknesses for powder and liquid coatings can only be guaranteed on their outer surfaces.

However, the special anodizing process always ensures comprehensive, high-quality corrosion protection across the entire surface.

6. Sealants

Krapf & Lex uses (two) standard sealants that can be used for all products, both indoors and outdoors. Both sealants can be painted over and have been tested for adhesion.

  • Sikaflex 521 UV (gray and black)
  • Skiaflex 211 (gray)

Sikaflex 521 UV is used for all sealant joints not painted over by Krapf & Lex.

We have adhesion test results for Skiaflex 211 and Skiaflex 521 UV, conducted in accordance with DVS 1618, for the following surfaces:

  • Anodized
  • Sandblasted aluminum
  • Powder-coated with IGP KORROPRIMER 30
  • Interpon D1036 powder coating in RAL 7016 and IGP-HWF 3001, 5903 in RAL 9006

Any test reports regarding adhesion that may be required when using other sealants or surface finishes (e.g., powder coatings) must be billed separately.

Krapf & Lex assumes no liability for the adhesion properties of sealants specified by the customer. We assume that these have been tested and approved by the customer.
